Universal Studios Review(6/6/05)

Today, it was off to Universal Studios and IOA, I was very eager to go to Universal of course to try out the Mummy after just missing out on it last year so I'm hoping I'm not going to be let down.

Went straight to the Mummy Ride, and it was walk on, Queue is very nicely themed, with a few interactive effects inside, so very nicely done. Hopped in the front car and prepeared myself. So the basic principle is you're going around the Mummy Tomb, and he's trying to kill you everway possible. There are some fantastic effects on the ride, One where all the Mummy's Solders jump up and there's fire effects all around you.

The backwards part for me was disapointing, but starts off nicely, as it looks like loads of the little beatles coming out of the wall, I was expecting more out of the backwards bit, but it was mearly a push off the turntable, and not really a launch.

You then turn around, and go into a upwards launch, Its not particually thrilling, but does the job, There is then a long dark rollercoaster part, going into the Fake Ending, that for me was really good, and the fire effect on the wall was good. The ride then ended with another short dark fast rollercoaster part.

Overall, I liked it the more times I rode it(5 times in all, most with SRQ which rocked), at first I felt a tad disapointed as I was expecting more from it(I think I hyped it up too much) but I certaintly got to enjoy it more in the end.

Up next was MIB, I love this ride, but still dont know how to get a higher score than I did(330,000 is still good) but I know I could get much more than that.

Did Most other usual stuff(Back to the Future,ET,T2,Shrek 4D) and I also saw Fear Factor Live which had just reopened in the old Wild Wild West show stadium. It was pretty good actually and certaintly entertaining to watch,No real extreme stunts, but anyone can apply to actually do it, and the winner gets 2 free tickets to Universal or IOA anytime they want.

Universal started getting really busy, so it was over to IOA. Didnt look too busy here, so soon got started with some SRQ rides on Hulk,Dr Doom's Fearfall, and Spiderman(Amazing Ride as usual)

Then went on Dudley's Ripsaw Falls, queued for 45 mins(Ouch) and then at the end, the ride broke down for 10 mins so we were stuck on our logs waiting to unload(GRRRR) I still enjoy this ride, but noticed the waterfall effect going up the final lift hill was'nt working today(I rather like that as it gives everyone a scare) JPRA was up next, and have to say, I was rather disapointed, where is the maintenance team for this ride. Effects not working include

The Gates leading into Jurassic Park staying open
The Raptor knocking your boat off course doesnt create the bump on the boat
The little Raptors on the crashed boat not moving
The Box before going up the big lift hill not dropping onto boat.

Funnily enough, these same effects were not working last year so whats going on here, Its certaintly not upto Universal's high standard.

I left the best till last, The Dragons, and managed 2 rides on Fire,1 Ride on Ice(Ran out of time for more rides) Fire is still the best for me I think, but I certaintly prefer Ice for its WALL effect, and loop near miss so they are still nearly even(Its so cool seeing the Fire Train really fly out of the helix into the loop from Ice's front seats, It creates a better effect) Got sneaky when coming off the Dragons each time though, no one was guarding Universal Express so sneaked back in line cutting the long walk back, Hey it was walk on into station anyway so its not like I really cut in front of people

After that, It was time to go. Overall it was a good day I think. Crowds got busy but was still bearable, and the SRQ's helped of course, and overall YES the Mummy just about lived upto my expectactions

Over the next few days on my Holiday, I really got to ride the Mummy loads(I lost count in the end, It probably reached the 15-20 range) but It just seemed to get more enjoyable with each ride and I nearly learned all the spiels that the Mummy produces off by heart

Also the Staff were suberb, never have I seen such an great bunch of staff all enjoying themselves, and really interacting with the general public,It just added to the experience so much. Also Some rides varied a bit in that some effects wouldnt work, or we would stop for longer in certain sections(Certaintly made it more interesting at times) for example, The Fire Effects in the First Mummy Section were playing up on the last day I was there(On and off each ride), And On the Fake Ending, there was sometimes one side of the Ceiling of Fire working. Also I was once stopped at the bottom of the main launch lift hill for a good 2 minutes.

Definatly a good ride though, Go and ride it while you can
